My wife and I finished reading Smart Couples Finish Rich by David Bach. I appreciate that Bach really forces couples (as much as an author can) to enagage each other and talk through financial goals and issues. He also includes a few exercises to help couples figure out why and what they are actually saving for.
We don’t want to just have money, but to be able to accomplish a goal or live by a value. To this extent, my wife Sonia and I sat down to write our top five values and goals.
My values:
- Freedom
- Family and friends
- Growth
- Health
- Security
- Creativity
So I have more than 5, but these are the values that I want to steer my life decisions. Not all of my wife’s values were the same as mine. That’s a good thing, but it is something that I need to consider as I help to plot our course.
I also came to the conclusion that I cannot be dictated by any single value- it is a balancing act. I can’t let my value of living a free life (free to chase the pursuits that I want - i.e. starting a successful blog) get in the way of spending time with Sonia. And while I love my family and friends dearly, I cannot let the time I need to persue self-growth and financial security always take a back seat to them.
This is where things get sticky. Too bad Bach does not give us the magic potion that helps us balance out the needs and wants of everyone’s values.
In a later post, I will discuss my goals that came out of my above values.
What does money represents in your life? Are there values that will guide your financial decisions?
