Money problems have always worried me. When my wife, S, and I decided to get married I was still in debt. I was making a decent salary but this made my debt and lack of savings even more embarrassing. With my salary I had no reason to be in debt. I suddenly felt pressure to make sure I could support me and my wife to be.
I didn’t want S thinking I was foolish. I wondered if I should just shoulder my debt myself and not say anything. I remembered what a lack of communication led to when I was growing up - constant battles between my parents about money. I had to be honest or suffer the same fate that my parents did when they were starting out. So, I calmed myself down and resolved to talk to my wife about my credit card debt.
So what happened? We discussed my debt and it turned out she owed money on credit cards too. Turns out that I am not the only person the America with debt. According to the Federal Reserve, total US consumer revolving debt reached $941 billion in 2007, up from $879 billion at the end of 2006 .
We talked about her debt and my debt and resolved to do something about all of it. The best part of the conversation was that once we began talking about our debt, it became easier to talk about other issues such as retirement, buying a house, insurance, etc., all because of that first conversation.
